Spiritual service is defined in Sri Chaitanya-caritamrita as service pleasing to the Almighty Lord Krishna or Vishnu. It enlivens people and raises consciousness, lifting them from the burdensome effects of material work.
Matter is dependent on spirit. Without spirit, matter is dead and inert. Without spiritual service, everything else remains as decorations on a dead body.
